Can Raúl Jiménez Become Premier League Penalty King?

When Raúl Jiménez coolly tucked away a penalty against Nottingham Forest on 22nd December, it resulted in two things. It ended up giving Fulham all three points from the match, and it saw Jiménez match Yaya Toure’s penalty-kick record.

The penalty against Forest was the 11th Premier League penalty the Mexican has taken and the 11th he has scored. Nobody in the history of the competition can boast a record as good as this, except Toure (also 11 from 11). However, with the Ivorian having long retired, Jiménez will be able to take the crown for himself next time Fulham win a spot kick.

There can be much discussion about who is the best penalty taker of the Premier League era. Matt Le Tissier, with 25 scored and only one missed, is regularly part of the conversation, but you also have the likes of Danny Murphy (18), Callum Wilson (16) and James Beattie (16), who also only missed one. ‘Missed one’ is key here, though, because unlike them, Jiménez could very feasibly end his Premier League career without a single mark on his record.

The Mexican is 34 years old, and his contract with Fulham expires in the summer. He is still enjoying regular minutes in the English top flight, but he only has two non-penalty league goals from nearly 1,000 minutes this campaign. With it fair to say he is past his peak, it is hard to imagine him having much longer left at this level.

That does, however, mean he is unlikely to take many more penalties, and therefore, he has a great chance of keeping his perfect record intact. Take enough penalties and a miss will inevitably come, as they have always done to any great taker. Even Cole Palmer missed having enjoyed a perfect record from his first 12 Premier League attempts. If this season were to be the last for Jiménez in the English top flight, he might only have one or two more penalties left to take.

If we were to assume the 34-year-old has a couple more and converts them both, he would enjoy a lead at the top of the perfect penalty record chart that could well stand for some time.

Players with Perfect Penalty Record (Premier League Only) Penalties Scored
Raúl Jiménez 11
Yaya Toure 11
Dimitar Berbatov 9
Ruben Neves 8
Chris Wood 8

Time is against Chris Wood, who, at 34 years old, will likely not have enough opportunities to overtake Jiménez, even if he never misses another penalty. Ruben Neves is perhaps more of a threat, given that the 28-year-old is reportedly keen on a Premier League return. Then again, there is no guarantee he would become the first-choice spot taker at a new club, should a deal materialise.

Either way, just one more successful penalty would put Jiménez solely at the top of the leaderboard for a fair while, giving him a welcome entry in the Premier League record books.

The Jiménez Technique

There are many ways to take a penalty, and over the years, Jiménez has dabbled with a few. His first Premier League penalty, when playing for Wolves, saw him adopt a very standard run and hit the ball hard and low into the corner.

By the time of his first Fulham penalty (League Cup), he employed a slow but smooth run-up and then rolled the ball calmly into the corner. More recently, however, the Mexican has favoured a very stuttery run-up with his eyes fixed on the keeper. This is what he used when converting his most recent penalty against Nottingham Forest. The idea with this approach is that he waits to see which way the keeper is heading and puts the ball the other way.

This means that Jiménez does not have much of a preference for a side when it comes to penalties. He just wants to put it wherever there is space. Out of his 11 Premier League penalties, five have gone to the left and six to the right. Not once has he attempted to power it down the middle of the goal, and only once has he lifted it in the upper half.

Although his technique has evolved over time, his Premier League record is no fluke. Across all competitions, for club and country, he has scored 42 penalties and missed just 2. A conversion rate of 95.5% puts him among the absolute elite penalty takers of all time.

To finish, here is a list of all 11 penalties the Mexican has successfully converted in the English top flight. The two scored against Ipswich came in the same match, a 2-2 draw in which 75% of the goals scored were penalties.
