The 2024/25 season is now firmly in the record books, with the last significant match of the domestic season seeing Oldham edge past Southend in the play-off final to earn promotion back to the Football League. Many fans will already be counting down the days until the new season begins.
Thankfully there are a few important intermediary dates along the way to tide us over until August. The fixtures for the new season will be announced on the 18th of June – so not long to wait. And of course there is the ongoing drama and rumour mill of the transfer window, not to mention the Club World Cup, which runs from mid-June until mid-July and will be held in the United States.
However, rather than look forward to the new season, here we take a look back at the last Premier League campaign. This will be a rather more pleasant experience for fans of some clubs than for others, as we focus on the highest-scoring top-flight matches of 2024/25.
We have to go back to 2007 for the Premier League clash with the most goals ever, as Portsmouth thumped Reading 7-4 in a chaotic game. Ten goals have been scored in a match on several occasions, though anecdotally one might say the PL is becoming more boring, with the last of those double-digit goalfests back in 2013. Mind you, we did see a nine-goal thriller in the campaign just gone.

The highest-scoring contest of the 2024/25 Premier League came at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. That it came between the hosts and Liverpool should not come as a major surprise given those two clubs’ games were the highest-scoring across the whole season on average.
Tottenham scored 64 times but conceded 65, that aggregate of 129 the highest in the division. Liverpool were more potent in attack and more parsimonious in defence, but their games still saw 127 goals (86 for, 41 against).
The clubs, who were part of the breakaway group that tried to form a European Super League not so long ago, ended the season 16 places and 46 points apart. At the end of 2024, things were much closer in the table, though not on the pitch, as the pair treated neutrals to a sensational early Christmas present in the shape of a 6-3 away win for Liverpool.
The result, on the 22nd of December 2024, saw Liverpool move four points clear at the top of the table. Spurs suffered badly with injuries last term, especially at the back, and Arne Slot’s men capitalised in ruthless fashion. Tottenham had Archie Gray, then 18, playing as a makeshift centre back, partnered by Radu Dragusin, whilst Djed Spence was on the left.
It could have been worse for the home side too, as Liverpool racked up 24 shots, 12 of which were on target. They created 11 “Big Chances” (a statistical metric) and though their xG was “only” 5.63, given the quality of the players at Liverpool’s disposal, they could very easily have scored seven, eight or even more.
Luis Dias got a brace, as did Mo Salah, with Alexis MacAllister and Dominik Szoboszlai getting the others. Spurs’ goals, little consolation, came from James Maddison, Dejan Kulusevski and former Red Dominic Solanke. A day to forget for the many Spurs fans in attendance but one that will live long in the memory of those Liverpool supporters who made the trip south.
Chelsea Hit Wolves for Six

0-1 | Jackson 2′ | |
Cunha 27′ | 1-1 | |
1-2 | Palmer 45′ | |
Larsen 45+6′ | 2-2 | |

2-5 | Madueke 63′ | |
2-6 | Félix 80′ |
The second-highest-scoring game of the season also saw a big away win where the visitors scored six times. On the 25th of August, things were looking decidedly bright for Enzo Maresca’s Chelsea as they recorded a handsome 6-2 win against Wolves at Molineux. Chelsea went on to finish fourth and qualify for the Champions League, whilst they also completed the set of UEFA trophies by winning the Europa Conference League.
At one stage they had been aiming for a little more though, with Cole Palmer producing some sensational numbers at the start of the season. Ice Cold Palmer certainly went off the boil as the season wore on and his reduced output was a big part of the reason any faint title hopes they might have harboured vanished.
However, in the heady days of summer and early autumn, Palmer and his other attacking colleagues were magnificent. The former Man City man scored one and had three assists against Wolves and by the end of October, he had seven goals and five assists from nine games. From December he then added seven more goals and an assist in nine games before the goal involvements dried up.
Returning to the thrashing of Wolves, though, Palmer was perhaps outshone by Noni Madueke. The youngster grabbed a treble in quick time, scoring after 49, 58 and 63 minutes. Nicolas Jackson scored after just two minutes, with Palmer getting his goal just before half time. Joao Felix wrapped up the scoring in the 80th minute.
In truth, the clash was far more even than the score made it look but the Blues were clinical in front of goal. Wolves were twice level, at 1-1 and 2-2, and in a fiery encounter, they could have perhaps earnt a point on another day.
Forest Record Biggest Win

The biggest win of the season, and also one of the games with most goals, was a shock 7-0 win for Nottingham Forest over Brighton. Forest had an incredible season, occupying a top-four spot for a huge swathe of the campaign before missing out on the Champions League and ending seventh. Even so, that was a remarkable outcome for a side many fancied to be relegated.
Their 7-0 home win came on the 1st of February 2025 and the rout was started by an own goal in the 12th minute. Kiwi Chris Wood got a hat-trick, with one of those from the spot, whilst Morgan Gibbs-White, Neco Williams and Jota Silva got the others. Showing what a crazy league the English top-flight is, Bournemouth had beaten Forest 5-0 just a week before this fixture.
