Christmas is drawing closer – it must be because we’re into the sixth week of festive music in shops – and yet, somehow, Wolves still have fewer points than a triangle! After yet another defeat in midweek, the Black Country outfit have just two points from their first 14 games of the season.
That is a genuinely shocking return and sees them well and truly cut adrift at the foot of the table. They are eight points behind Burnley in 19th and fully 12 shy of safety. They dispensed with their manager some time ago but the new man, Rob Edwards, has been unable to guide his troops to a first league win of the season. There is even discussion that they have effectively accepted relegation this term and are already planning for life in the Championship.
Loss in Crucial Six-Pointer at Home
🐺 Wolves are having one of the WORST starts to a Premier League season in history:

If Wolves were to have any chance of survival, many felt they had to win in a big six-pointer at home to Nottingham Forest. The East Midlands side is one of five clubs right in the relegation mix, but Edwards’ men were unable to take anything from the game.
They lost 1-0 in a tight, tense, rather dour game that saw few chances. The hosts held their own but only managed to have one shot on target during the 90 minutes. The visitors had twice as many shots overall and three times as many on target.
That dominance in terms of efforts on goal was established in the first period, one which ended 0-0. Wolves were the better side in the second period, but after 72 minutes, Igor Jesus pinched the only goal of the game. He had earlier had one ruled out for offside (after 36 minutes), but he got his reward, and it sealed all three points for his side. With that one header, Forest earned more points than Wolves have accumulated all season!
Worst Starts in Premier League History
There have been some terrible teams in the Premier League over the years, at least in terms of the woeful number of points they have ended the season with. Derby County hold the record for now, a very unwanted one, earning just 11 points all term in 2007/08. They won just one game, and reaching 12 points will be the absolute minimum aim for Wolves this season.
In 2024/25, Southampton managed two wins and 12 points. But after 14 games, Derby and the Saints had five and four points respectively. Wolves have lost 12 out of 14 games, drawing just two. Their goal difference is minus 22, with 29 conceded and a mere seven scored. And this dreadful tally of two points after 14 games, or almost 37% of the season, is the worst in Premier League history!
Or, more accurately, the joint worst. In 2020/21, Sheffield United also lost 12 and drew two of their opening 14 fixtures. Indeed, they only reached two points in that 14th game with a draw against Brighton, having earlier collected a point at home against Fulham. They didn’t win until their 18th game, losing 16 of those. They did not draw again but did manage seven wins to be relegated in 20th place with 23 points. Time will tell where Wolves end up.
Burnley Lose Again But Real Hope for Leeds

Not so long ago, there was talk of all three newly promoted clubs staying up. Sunderland were flying high, Leeds were mid-table, and Burnley were outside of the bottom three. The Black Cats continue to defy expectations, but heading into this round of midweek fixtures, it was beginning to look like both Burnley and Leeds might be doomed.
Both in the bottom three, the Clarets had lost four in a row and seven out of nine, their only positive results coming in huge wins against Leeds and Wolves. Leeds had also lost four in a row and six out of seven, so it really was beginning to look bleak for both.

Burnley have now made it five defeats in succession after a 1-0 loss at home to Palace and remain in the bottom three. Leeds, however, recorded a massive home win over Chelsea, a team that had been improving and moving up the table.
Daniel Farke’s men were superb and deserved their 3-1 win over the Blues. It was a great way to build on an excellent second half in their last game against City, when they came back from 2-0 down to draw level at 2-2, before a late winner for the hosts broke Leeds’ hearts.
They bullied Chelsea and were superb all over the pitch, roared on by a vocal, raucous home crowd. The win and three points moved them out of the relegation zone, four points ahead of Burnley and three ahead of West Ham (although the Hammers have a game in hand 24 hours later away at Man United).
It was the manner of the win as much as anything that will really give Leeds, their manager and the players hope, though. They were excellent, and there is now real hope that they might just have what it takes to stay up.
